Imerovigli is a village perched on a cliff overlooking the island of Santorini and its volcanic caldera. You can watch the sunset from the terraces of its elegant bars, refined restaurants and exclusive boutique hotels, some of which are set into caves. Walkers can follow the Ekklisia Theoskepasti trail, which passes through the ruins of the 13th‑century Venetian castle of Skaros to the top of the iconic rock of the same name, home to the Church of Theoskepasti, famous for its blue dome. Imerovigli began as a fortress, as its name suggests: Imera (day) and viglia (watchtower), a lookout point in a strategic position from which people could keep an eye out for unwanted pirates, safely stationed 300 metres above sea level. According to the archives, the area has been occupied since the late 16th century, although the cartographer Boundelmonti noted that the fortress already stood here in 1421.
