Oban is a seaside resort town in the Argyll and Bute council area of Scotland. Though it’s quite small, it’s the biggest town between Helensburgh and Fort William, and in tourist season it can have up to 25,000 people staying. Oban sits in a beautiful spot on the Firth of Lorn. The bay is almost a perfect horseshoe, sheltered by the island of Kerrera, with the Isle of Mull lying beyond. To the north is the long, low island of Lismore, with the mountains of Morvern and Ardgour behind. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS • McCaig’s Tower – This tower looks out over Oban Bay. It takes about 15 minutes to walk up the hill using one of the signposted routes on the roads, or by the steps. There are great views of Kerrera and Mull and up the Sound of Mull. • Dunollie Castle – Also known as Dunoille Castle, this is the ancient seat of the MacDougalls of Lorn. It’s a small castle at the far end of the bay from the station. • Dunstaffnage Castle – A castle about three miles north of Oban. • War & Peace Museum – A museum that tells the story of Oban’s role in the world wars. It’s on Corran Esplanade, just north of the North Pier, beside the Regent Hotel. Open daily 10:00–16:00 from March to November. Free admission, donations welcome.
