Viterbo is an ancient city and comune in the Lazio region of central Italy, and the capital of the province of Viterbo. In its early history, it conquered and absorbed the neighbouring town of Ferento. It lies roughly 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Rome’s GRA ring road on the Via Cassia, and is framed by the Monti Cimini and Monti Volsini ranges. The historic centre is enclosed by largely intact medieval walls dating from the 11th and 12th centuries, with access through ancient gateways. Beyond agriculture, the Viterbo area is known for its pottery, marble, and wood. The town hosts Italy’s gold reserves, a notable Academy of Fine Arts, the University of Tuscia, and the Italian Army’s Aviation Command headquarters and training centre. Set within a major geothermal and spa area, it draws visitors from across central Italy.
