Portomarín Spain

Portomarín is a municipality in the Spanish province of Lugo, with a population of 2,008 (2001 Spanish Census) and an area of 115 km². It lies on the pilgrimage route known as the French Way of the Camino de Santiago. The town of Portomarín was originally built next to a Roman bridge over the Miño River and was rebuilt in the Middle Ages. In the 1960s, the Miño River was dammed to create the Belesar reservoir, flooding the old village of Portomarín. The town’s most historic buildings were moved brick by brick and reconstructed in the new town, including its castle-like main church, the Church of San Juan of Portomarín. When the water level in the reservoir is low, the remains of the old village, its riverfront, and the ancient bridge are still visible.
